What Is a Category C (Class 2) Licence?
A Category C licence allows you to drive:
- Rigid lorries over 3,500kg
- Vehicles up to 32 tonnes
- Vehicles with a trailer up to 750kg
This is the most popular entry-level HGV licence in the UK and is ideal for:

Who Can Apply for Cat C Training?
To start your rigid training, you must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Hold a full UK car licence
- Apply for your HGV provisional licence
- Pass a medical (D4 form)
- Pass the HGV theory & hazard perception tests

1. How long does Cat C training take?
Most candidates complete training in 4 days, plus theory and medical beforehand.
2. What vehicles can I drive with a C Class licence?
Rigid vehicles over 3,500kg up to 32 tonnes, with trailers up to 750kg.
3. Is Category C the same as Class 2?
Yes. Category C, Class 2 and Rigid licence all mean the same qualification.
4. Do I need Driver CPC?
If you want to drive commercially, you will usually need Driver CPC. We can advise based on your situation.
5. What if I fail the test?
If needed, we can arrange additional training and a retest quickly to get you back on track.
6. Can I upgrade to Class 1 later?
Yes. After gaining experience, you can progress to Category C+E (Class 1).
